Interview with Forsakken

Interview with Anni Viljanen from Red Moon Architect

Red Moon Architect's biography (Taken from Band's Facebook).

“Crushing doom with hooking melodies and the best vocals from Finnish scene. Heaviness in this quantity will triumph any 2nd World War tank battalion” - Tuomas Saukkonen (Before the Dawn/Black Sun Aeon/Dawn of Solace)

“Very strong newcomer into the already highly acclaimed Finnish melo-doom troops. Highly recommended to fans of Swallow the Sun” - Markus Vanhala (Omnium Gatherum/Insomnium)

Red Moon Architect is a melodic doom metal band originating from Finland’s gloomiest town, Kouvola. Their debut album ‘Concealed Silence’ saw the daylight in October 2012 and was greeted with excitement among metal fans all around the world. Red Moon Architect’s second album ’Fall’ was released in March 2015 via Playground Music. They have since gained a strong following in the metal community and have performed at Finland’s legendary Tuska Festival and played shows with Finland’s top metal acts such as Amorphis, Moonsorrow, Barren Earth and Wolfheart.

Red Moon Architect’s strength is diversity. The music is very dark and slow doom metal with strong guitars and low grunts but appeals to a wider audience with strong melodies and beautiful female vocals. Diversity is also behind the story of the band. One could imagine the band’s songwriter and drummer Saku Moilanen is the gloomiest guy in his hometown Kouvola but anyone who’s met him would probably disagree: “The bleakness is just inside my head and Red Moon Architect’s music is the way other people can have a peek what is going on behind the face of the nice guy,” Moilanen ponders.

Red Moon Architect are:

Saku Moilanen: Drums, Keyboards
Ville Rutanen: Vocals
Matias Moilanen: Guitars
Anni Viljanen: Vocals
Jukka Jauhiainen: Bass

N.A. Foy:  Tell me a little about your upcoming album "Return of the Black Butterflies." How is it similar and/or different from your first two albums?

Anni: I think this is the best of the three records we have done so far. It's more focused. We have new growler Ville and the contrast between our sounds is deeper.

N.A. Foy:  As we are speaking, I'm listening to and they are playing "Tormented" and "Journey." Sounds really good. Do you have a particular favorite song off the new album?

Anni: I really like the atmosphere in "end on days". Another favorite is NDE. I get stuck in the story of that song and feels almost like time stops.

N.A. Foy:  How old were you when you decided to pursue a career in music, and were there any particular musicians or singers that inspired you?

Anni: I don't think I ever decided to work as musician. I actually ended up singing in Red Moon Architect when I was studying music technology, so I guess I once thought that I have more to give if I work on the other side of microphone. But I'm very glad how things went and that I can now also do my childhood dream as a singer. Back then I always looked up to famous female pop singers and Max Martin, the Swedish songwriter and producer.

N.A. Foy:  Will you be releasing any videos from the new album?

Anni: Yes I think we will 🙂

N.A. Foy:  How did the band meet and first get together?

Anni: First Red Moon Architect was Sakus project and he asked me to sing the song "Realm" which is in the first album "Concealed silence." Jukka and Matias joined when we started to play live after the release of the first album. The second album "Fall" was more an album made by the band but Saku is the mastermind behind every record. Ville was chosen as a new male singer last year.

N.A. Foy:  Do you do any of the song writing yourself?

Anni: I do most of the melodies I sing and I also write lyrics. For example, "Tormented" is my writing.

N.A. Foy:  What do you like to do for enjoyment when you are not doing music?

Anni: I have a day job at Helsinki Music Centre. Besides work and music I do sports, hang around with my fiancé and my dog, and watch too much Netflix.

N.A. Foy:  If you were stuck on an island and somehow were able to listen to music, what 3 CDs would you want with you?

Anni: "Conditions of my parole" from Puscifer would be the first. That's the best album ever. Then "Magma" from Gojira. I've been listening it a lot lately. I'm a great fan of Jean Sibelius so the third would be his 5th symphony. The finale is very beautiful and powerful and always brings tears in my eyes.

N.A. Foy:  Is there a story behind the name "Red Moon Architect?"

Anni: It's Saku who came up with the name but what I've heard of there's no particular story behind it. Red Moon and its mythology as a "Blood moon" is just intriguing.

N.A. Foy:  Us fans always like to know things about the band members. How about some favorites. What is your favorite color? Number? Foods? Movie(s)? Book(s)? Or any other favorites you want to mention?

Anni: I like animals specially dogs. I eat mostly vegan food and my favourite is crispy tofu with veggies or vegetarian pizza. I like to cook and I use a lot of spice. I watch a lot of movies and series. Can't mention any favourite, but right now the animation serie "Rick and Morty" rocks.

N.A. Foy:  What is the message that you want to give your fans as an example as a person? Is there anything else you’d like to add before we finish ?

Anni: Greetings to everyone reading this! I hope you enjoy our new album "Return of the black butterflies".
